SCC
to offer casino/gaming management
With
the birth of gaming on the Cherokee Boundary
and elsewhere in North Carolina, the industry
has grown dramatically over the last few
years in the region and state. The promise
of anticipated future growth bodes well
for job seekers in this field but many people
are unsure of what jobs exist within the
field.
To answer such questions and to meet the
need for gaming industry training, Southwestern
Community College will offer the course
Casino & Gaming Management in the college's
fall schedule lineup.
"This course was designed in cooperation
with management personnel at Harrah's in
Cherokee. While it's the first of several
that will lead to a certificate in Gaming
Management at SCC for those who want to
work in a casino, it's also a course of
interest to people who just want to know
what actually goes on in a casino,"
said Thom Brooks, SCC dean of Career Technologies.
"The course will provide an overview
of how a casino operates, from the gaming
operation to the hotel to the restaurants."
According to Brooks, Casino & Gaming
Management will be co-facilitated with a
senior management official from Harrah's.
"In addition to the co-facilitator
from Harrah's, we'll have guest lecturers
from the casino from different management
levels," he said. "The students
will actually hear first hand from Harrah's
insiders on how their operation functions.
We've never developed a course like this
before and we're very excited about it."
Southwestern plans to expand from this first
course into a certificate program through
which students will learn and apply administrative
and practical skills needed for supervisory
and administrative positions in gaming management.
"The coursework will be extensive for
this fascinating and complex field,"
said Brooks. "Students will gain knowledge
and skills in gaming operations, guest relations
and customer service, gaming facility management,
marketing, gaming law and regulations, personnel
administration, social issues in gaming,
and other areas critical to the success
of gaming industry professionals."
Casino & Gaming Management will be offered
on Monday evenings from 6 to 7:45 in Sylva,
Bryson City and Franklin. For more information,
contact Brooks at 800.447.4091 or 828.586.4091,

is August 17 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Interested
students should begin application as soon
as possible. For application or registration
