Free testing
at the Health Fair
Have your blood pressure checked and help
accelerate a cure for blood cancer at the
same time
during the Health Fair Thursday, Oct. 26,
at the Jackson County Community Services Building.
Free blood pressure screening will be provided
by Southwestern Community College Nursing
Class of 2007, including Kristi Brock, left,
and Tyra Greene, right. The SCC nursing class
is sponsoring the Health Fair, which will
be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. A focus
of the fair will be the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society's Team in Training, the world's largest
endurance sports training program. Experts
will be on hand to discuss this program which
trains participants in a full or half marathon
run or walk, a triathlon or 100-mile bike
ride, all of which raise funds to fight blood
diseases. A 1 p.m. Fun Walk/Run will spotlight
this program, said Jennifer Petosa, SCC nursing
student and two-time Ironman triathlon finisher.
"Stop by our fitness booth and learn
how to go from couch to 5K," said Petosa,
one of the event organizers. In addition to
blood pressure, free screening will be provided
for blood sugar, body mass index, vision and
oxygen saturation. Information will also be
available on smoking cessation, nutrition,
breast cancer, diabetes and sexual health.
