Building Sweet Holiday Memories

With the enticing aroma of freshly-baked gingerbread filling the room, Southwestern Community College culinary technology students applied their cooking and creative skills to building gingerbread houses. Building materials included fruit rollups for windows, M&M for door handles, pretzels for foundation logs and Tootsie Roll Pops for filler logs, powdered sugar and egg whites as stucco and chewing gum as shingles. The students' creations are among those at the Grove Park Inn Gingerbread House Display. Entries are on display through Jan. 6. Several of the 400 entries are also featured in the Grove Arcade downtown Asheville. While the Southwestern entries did not receive top prizes in the competition, they achieved recognition for the school's culinary curriculum. For more information, contact Ceretta Davis at 586.4091 or 1.800.447.4091, ext. 256.
