Native
American Festival held at SCC
Cherokee music, dance, language and
history took center stage at Southwestern
Community College Tuesday, Nov. 28,
during a program sponsored by the
SCC Native American Society.

The event featured
flute music by Mark Hicks of Cherokee
and a performance by the Cherokee
Elementary Dancers. A highlight
of the dancers' performance was
a friendship dance in which the
audience was invited to participate.
Bo Taylor from the Cherokee Museum
spoke on Cherokee traditions and
misconceptions about the Cherokee
culture. Dressed in traditional
17th century Cherokee clothing,
he also explained the Cherokee warrior
tradition and led a performance
by the Warriors of Anikituhwa Dancers.
The program also included a talk
by Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle,
assistant to Chief Michelle Hicks,
on tribal government of the Eastern
Band of Cherokee and commented on
the Charles Frazier's recently published
book, Thirteen Moons.
The performers and the audience
were treated to Indian fry bread
prepared by the SCC Culinary Technology
students.
