Letts
reappointed to SCC Board of Trustees
Governor Michael Easley has reappointed
Mary Jane Letts to serve a four year term
on the Southwestern Community College
Board of Trustees. Ms. Letts was initially
appointed to the board in 2002.
A 1994 nominee for the North Carolina
Distinguished Woman Award, Letts is an
enrolled member of the Eastern Band of
Cherokee. She graduated from Northeastern
State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma
with a B.S. degree in education. She is
a businesswoman and retired director of
the Cherokee Reservation Cooperative Extension
Service.
Letts has served on numerous boards and
committees including the Governor's Economic
Task Force for western North Carolina
and the NC Arts Council. She is very active
in community development on the Cherokee
Boundary and has served as a member of
the SCC Foundation Board. She was also
instrumental in restoring the Oconaluftee
Island Park and establishing a Veterans
Park in commemoration of the Native Americans
serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Letts resides in Cherokee with her husband,
Ray Don. They have one son, Bradley Letts,
who is a District Court Judge for the
state.
"I am delighted with the reappointment
of Ms. Letts to the SCC Board of Trustees,"
said Dr. Cecil Groves, president of SCC.
"She has been an asset to the board
and I look forward to continuing our working
relationship during the next four years."
Conrad Burrell, chairman of the Southwestern
Board of Trustees, also stated he is pleased
with Letts' reappointment and is appreciative
of her commitment to the college and to
ensuring that SCC provides a quality,
affordable education to the citizens of
our service area.
