2007 Academic Awards Ceremony held

"During this information age of instant access, don’t fall so much in love with your computer screen that you abandon your friends,” Charlie McConnell told the award recipients during Southwestern Community College’s recent Academic Awards Ceremony.

Superintendent of Jackson County Schools from 1991-97 and one of the persons responsible for establishing New Century Scholars, McConnell talked about the strength and necessity for personal face-to-face contact.

"Friends can encourage and support you,” McConnell said, “something your computer will never do for you.”

In an age where most everything is “quick fix,” McConnell stressed that success may not come quickly but may instead require slow, cautious and continuing effort.

"The best and most memorable graduation speech I ever heard was one that Winston Churchill gave. He stood up and said just two words,” McConnell told the students. “Those two words were ‘Never quit.’ I couldn’t say it any better.”

During the ceremony McConnell recognized Christian Conway of Whittier and Shane Sullivan of Maggie Valley as Southwestern's two representatives of the N.C. Community College System Academic Excellence Award.

Students receiving academic awards must have a cumulative average of 3.5 or above. All eligible students who had maintained a perfect 4.0 cumulative received “high honors” recognition at the ceremony.
