A group of information technology
students in the computer information
technology and web technology
programs at Southwestern Community
College recently received
a behind-the-scenes look at
Harrah’s Cherokee Casino
information technology department.
"Our students were able
to see a real-world application
of what they are learning
at SCC from SCC graduates
working in the field,”
said Scott Baker, SCC computer
information technology and
web technology instructor.
Many former SCC students are
now employed by Harrah’s
Cherokee Casino, according
to Baker.
"The fact they can maintain
and handle the quantity of
data they do and be able to
retrieve it from several years
back with no computer down
time is such an impressive
feat. It was great to see
an IT department such as Harrah’s
in action and hear some of
the challenges they face from
day to day, as well as how
they work together to resolve
them,” said Duane Strain,
a computer information technology
student.
"It was an excellent
opportunity for students to
see what employment options
they have locally in the information
technology area,” said
Scott Cline, SCC computer
information technology and
web technology program coordinator.
“In one organization
like Harrah’s Cherokee
Casino, the skill set from
any of our three information
technology programs are utilized.”
The students also had an opportunity
to talk to representatives
from the Human Resource Department
and learn about future expansion
plans for the casino. At the
end of the tour, students
had the chance to tour one
of the luxury suites at the
top of the Casino Hotel.
SCC’s computer
information technology curriculum
is designed to prepare graduates
for employment with organizations
that use computers to process,
manage, and communicate information.

issues related to computer hardware,
software, and networks in a
manner that computer users can
understand. Classes cover computer
operations and terminology,
programming, operating systems,
database, networking, security,
and technical support.
SCC’s networking
technology curriculum
prepares individuals for employment
supporting network infrastructure
environments. Students will
learn how to use technologies
to provide reliable transmission
and delivery of data, voice,
image, and video communications
in business, industry, and
education.
In SCC’s web
technology curriculum
graduates prepare for careers
in the information technology
arena using computers and
distributed computing to disseminate
and collect information via
the web. Course work in this
program covers the terminology
and use of computers, servers,
databases, applications, programming
languages, as well as web
applications, site development
and design.
