Our mountains are home to
a vast diversity of trees,
including Service Berry, Musclewood,
Buckeye, Devil's Walking Stick,
Sassafras, a variety of oaks,
birches, maples, conifers
and much more. On June 9,
a workshop led by nationally-certified
arborist David Hatton will
provide the opportunity to
learn to identify trees of
the region.

through SCC on June 9,

Sponsored by Southwestern
Community College, the class
will begin with an introduction
before participants head out
on an easy hike to view specific
trees.
"We'll begin with an
overview on how to identify
trees, information that will
be useful to participants
when they later are out on
their own and want to know
more about the trees they
see around them," Hatton
said. "This will be a
fun class with the day spent
primarily in the woods studying
trees in their native habitat.
Everyone should wear hiking
or sturdy shoes and bring
a bag lunch, water and a notebook."
According to Hatton, the class
will carpool to the hike site.
Tree Identification is scheduled
Saturday, June 9, from 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m. and will start from
SCC's Jackson Campus in Sylva.
Cost is $44. To pre-register
