Culinary cakes judged

“It’s whimsical- to reflect my nature,” said Southwestern Community College culinary arts student Gabriel Finnegan of Cullowhee as he prepared his wedding cake for judging Wednesday, Dec. 12.

“The top two layers are chocolate with alternate chocolate and cherry filling and butter cream icing while the bottom is an apple-filled white cake- it’s something for everyone,” said Finnegan, who added red ornaments and cartoon characters for decoration.

Kari Litchfield of Franklin created a hand-beaded cake with white chocolate ganoche. “I learned that ganoche tends to bubble,” she said, “but that doesn’t affect the taste and I’ve added two secret ingredients to give mine a surprise.”

A select team of campus judges based their results on taste, as well as appearance:
