Every student and every teacher
in Macon County's Early College
High School will receive a free
laptop, thanks to the new 1:1
Laptop Pilot.
Macon is the only Early College
in Western North Carolina
and one of eight in the state
to be selected. The laptop
program is funded by the state
and supplemented by the Golden
Leaf Foundation and the software
company, SAS.

Haire made the announcement
during the Aug. 30 dedication
of Southwestern Community
College’s new Macon
Campus on Siler Road.
"Macon Early College,
which operates right here
in this beautiful new SCC
campus, will also receive
the software and professional
development necessary to successfully
implement the 1:1 program,”
Haire said.
He called the pilot “an
important statewide initiative”
and said the goal is to provide
students with the tools to
help them become productive
citizens ready to enter the
world of higher education
and adult responsibility.
“Macon County Schools,
Southwestern Community College
and Macon Early College High
School have been selected
to be a leader in reaching
this goal,” Robert Logan,
Associate Superintendent of
the Public Schools of North
Carolina, said in his award
letter.
Early college faculty members
will participate in development
and planning sessions and
be part of the program evaluation.
