"The Barn
Door Is Always Open"
for getting your hands
dirty at the 2007 Macon
County Fair. Here Southwestern
Community College director
of extension education
Hank Shuler demonstrates
the art of pottery making
to young fairgoer Makayla
Gibbs. The fair, carrying
on 54 years of tradition,
promotes the arts and
crafts as part of that
tradition. SCC's booth
follows "The Barn
Door Is Always Open"
theme and features the
new Macon Campus which
"opens the doors
to educational opportunities."
A sign tacked to the exhibit's
barn door recognizes the
Theo Siler Farm, now the
site of the Macon Campus.
At the fair you'll see
some of Macon County's
best baked and canned
goods, honey, vegetables,
steers, calves, goats,
lambs, pigs, rabbits,
dogs, cats and, oh, yes,
even a baby kangaroo!
The fair continues through
8 p.m. Saturday but if
you miss getting to immerse
your hands in clay, Shuler
will give you another
chance at the Mountain
Shapes and Colors Art
and Craft Sale Nov. 10-11
at SCC's Swain Center.
