An old schoolhouse, a group
of talented craft artists, a
fall day in the mountains and
the aroma of spicy apple cider
is a combination sure to guarantee
a great time. Once again, Mountain
Shapes and Colors bring a winning
combination together on the
weekend of Nov. 10-11 at Southwestern
Community College’s Swain
Center. Festival hours are 10
a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 1-5
p.m. Sunday.
Several features distinguish
this art and craft festival
from others, according to Hank
Shuler, SCC’s Heritage
Art’s director.
For instance, in The Kid’s
Corner, children 12 and under
can shop for themselves and
family members. Most of the
participating artists have set
aside items to be placed in
this special room for the kids.
More than 25 artists are participating,
including Allyson Gernandt of
Swain County, who has been creating
silver and gemstone jewelry
for a number of years. Another
artist, Sherry Keene, is an
outstanding basket weaver from
Franklin. Pottery is represented
well with five booths dedicated
to it, including Southwestern
Community College’s Heritage
Arts’ students. SCC’s
Master Pottery Certificate program
provides students the opportunity
to develop advance level skills
in an evening continuing education
program in Bryson City.
In addition to the arts and
crafts festival, Alice Mason,
Robin Whitley and Nancy Wilson
will entertain with an eclectic
blend of music ranging from
Celtic and country to blues.
Two local non-profit groups
are stepping forward to please
taste buds with some good old-fashioned
eatery. The West Swain Volunteer
Fire Department will be on board
with hotdogs, hamburgers, and
sandwiches while a local 4-H
group will have homemade desserts
and hot beverages.
Those helping with the festival
planning include staff and students
of SCC’s Master Pottery
program, members of the Stecoah
Artisans’ Guild and the
Swain County TDA.
Drawings will be held on the
hour for items contributed by
the artists. Everyone has a
chance of winning something
special made by a local artist,
Shuler said.
This is a juried art sale and
an excellent opportunity to
jump start your Christmas shopping
list, said Shuler.
SCC’s Swain Center is
located between mile markers
61 and 62 on US 74/19 at the
old Almond School.
