SECU Scholarships

Alan Salzano, Marsha Northrup, Cieara Gregory, Suzy Gregory, and Herb Oxendine
The State Employees Credit Union Foundation presented $5,000 scholarships to Marsha Northrup and Cieara Greogory, who are attending Southwestern Community College. The scholarships were given based on SECU's philosophy of "people helping people," recognizing the recipients leadership, excellence of character, integrity and community involvement. The scholarships will be used to pay for tuition and other education expenses. From left are Alan Salzano, SECU senior vice president; Northrup; Cieara Gregory; Suzanne Gregory, SCC financial aid officer and Herb Oxendine, SECU advisory board member. Northrup, who has a cumulative GPA of 4.00, is enrolled in SCC's nursing program. A 2000 graduate of Swain County High School, she is the lead technician in the pharmacy at Kerr Drugs in Bryson City. She volunteers at Mt. View Manor Nursing Home, participates in Relay for Life, regularly donates blood to the American Red Cross, was a member S.A.D.D. and the National Honor Society in high school and helps with fundraising efforts for local charities. Cieara Gregory was dual enrolled at Victory Christian School and SCC. She graduated high school this past spring with a high school GPA of 3.52 and a 4.0 at SCC. She is enrolled in the college transfer program and plans to attend Western Carolina University after graduation to pursue both her bachelor's and master's degrees in elementary education. She currently teaches 2-3 year-old children in Sunday school, is actively involved in missionary activities with her church, is a Little League softball coach and tutors students in algebra.
