Andrews Auld Heating & Cooling, along with the Charlotte district office of Lennox International, donated state-of-the-art high efficiency heating and cooling equipment to Southwestern Community College.
HVAC receives donation of heating & cooling equipment
SCC’s Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology instructor Randy Speights, left, describes the two-stage cooling equipment in this new heating and cooling equipment donated by Andrews Auld Heating & Cooling and Lennox International. Students with Speights are, from left, Homer Cunningham of Swain County, Derrick Lucie of Haywood County, Gary Vernon of Macon County, Scott Mason of Graham County, Dale Clouse of Macon County and Lee Chastain of Cherokee County.

This new heating and cooling equipment will be used to train future HVAC technicians in the latest techniques from servicing variable speed, two-stage cooling equipment and using the new environmentally friendly R410A refrigerant.

“Andrews Auld Heating & Cooling and Lennox International are committed to providing Southwestern with the most modern and advanced equipment possible,” said Thom Brooks, SCC dean of career technologies. “With training on the most advanced, highest efficiency equipment on the market, each graduating service technician will be better equipped to provide the best service possible.”

The HVAC field is changing rapidly and it will require technicians be trained in higher education, according to Brooks. “SCC's Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology program provides the basic knowledge and skills necessary to work with residential and light commercial systems. Topics in the program include mechanical refrigeration, heating and cooling theory, electricity, controls, air conditioning, furnaces, heat pumps, tools and instruments, and safety practices,” Brooks said.

"At Southwestern we have well-equipped lab facilities, and that is thanks in large part to companies like Andrews Auld and Lennox who remain committed to investing in workforce development," he said. Lennox is the leader in HVAC innovation and development and the recipient of the JD Power Award.

Space is still available for students interested in enrolling in the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology program in the fall. For more information and an application packet, contact the SCC admissions office at 586.4091, ext. 352.
