| If you wanted
to take Computer
Information Technology
classes but couldn’t
make the day classes, Southwestern
Community College’s
Macon
Campus has a new option.
Starting fall semester, the
program will be offered in
the evening, via ITV, on the
weekend and online.
Not only does this program
offer several ways to take
classes, it also saves gas
because the face-to-face
classes are in Franklin,
said Connie Haire, vice
president of the Macon Campus.

“We had folks express
an interest in taking this
program but they worked
during the day,” said
Scott Cline, SCC web and
computer information technology
instructor. “So we
decided to move the program
to fit their schedules.”
Drake Enterprises employees
represented a large segment
of interested folks, according
to Cline. “Connie
and I have been working
with Judy Barclay at Drake
to meet the needs of those
employees, as well as others.”
Timing of the class factors
in another way, too, said
Cline. “During the
tax season many of Drake’s
employees work increased
hours from the end of October
to April 15.
“The challenge here
was to come up with a schedule
that would allow the employees
to alleviate their course
load during their busy time.
This fall we will have evening
courses that will run from
August until the end of
October. The other courses
will either be offered online
or on Saturday.”
“Our goal is to help
them obtain an associate’s
degree within two years”
said Haire. “Drake
Enterprises currently has
an educational reimbursement
program for full-time employees
that will reimburse the
employees for certain classes,
depending on what grade
they make. I feel this is
a great program that encourages
employees to further their
education.”
Haire said the new program
schedules will also help
employees from other companies
to complete the Computer
Information Technology degree
in the evening, weekend
and online.
“We know there are
other employers who support
their employees’ educational
goals,” she said.
“We encourage both
employers and employees
to explore options to make
education like this advantageous
to both. If an employer
would like to know more
about this program for workers,
we can schedule a presentation
for them.”
