Southwestern Community College
Chemistry instructor Deanne
Oppermann has been selected
to participate in a Molecular
Genetics Workshop at the University
of Hawaii at Hilo from May
24-30, 2008. The workshop
is sponsored by the Center
for Workshops in the Chemical
Sciences.
CWCS was established in
2001 with the support of
the National Science Foundation
to provide chemistry faculty
across the nation with a
background and modern perspective
in key areas of the undergraduate
chemistry curriculum. Oppermann
and other participants have
their housing, registration
and per diem costs provided
by the center.
Participants in the Molecular
Genetics Workshop in Hawaii
will be receive an overview
in a variety of topics in
biotechnology and molecular
genetics, with an emphasis
on modern techniques for
DNA sequencing, genotyping,
and protein structure/function.
In addition to the lecture
and lab exercises presented
by the workshop instructors,
there will be invited seminar
speakers.
"What an amazing opportunity
for me to bring modern perspectives
in molecular genetics directly
into my classroom and lab.
I know my students will
benefit from my participation
in this workshop,"
Oppermann said.
In addition to being a
full time chemistry instructor,
Oppermann is also a college
transfer and biotechnology
advisor at Southwestern.
SCC has an articulation
agreement with Asheville
Buncombe Technical Community
College for an associate
in applied science degree
in biotechnology. Students
can complete their first
year of study at SCC and
then transfer to AB Tech
to complete the A.A.S degree.
