Southwestern Community College's
Heritage Arts Institute will
offer a new ceramics course
in handbuilding this summer
from June 4 through Aug.13.
Meeting on Wednesdays from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m., participants
will have ample studio time
to complete several projects
through final firing. The
registration fee is $60 and
materials are estimated to
cost approximately $100.
Malti Turnbull, an adjunct
instructor, will bring her
experience and love of handbuilding
and sculpture to the classroom
in this 11-week class at
the SCC
Swain Center.
In addition to teaching
the basics of handbuilding
which includes pinch pots,
coils, slabs, and extrusions,
students will learn to build
on these techniques in the
creation of sculptures.
Turnbull's upbringing in
Kenya is readily apparent
in her choice of ceramic
subjects which often-times
include the wildlife and
folklore of Africa. In addition
to the African traditions,
she also enjoys playing
off the folklore and design
themes of other cultures
in her work. Indigenous
ceramic methods, myths,
and the ritualistic and
domestic use of pottery
are covered in the class.
In addition to introducing
the concept of negative
and positive space in pottery,
a variety of decorative
techniques will be discussed
and demonstrated to enhance
the forms students produce.
Pit firing and raku will
also be introduced.
