Approximately 50 seventh
grade students from Scotts
Creek School in Southwestern
Community College’s
GEAR UP program participated
in Job Shadowing Day during
May.
Job shadowing allows the
student to explore careers
and opportunities that may
interest them. By "shadowing"
someone in their job for
a day, students got a first-hand,
insider's look into what
that person's job involves.
The shadowed person showed
students the benefits and
challenges of the position.
By seeing how the person
interacts with their co-workers,
participating in the activities
that they face every day,
and seeing what it takes
to "be that person,"
students insight into whether
that job or career is something
they might want to pursue.
From job shadowing students
begin to develop the connection
between academics and careers.
In addition, job shadowing
helps to build community
partnerships between schools
and businesses.
Some of the places students
job shadowed were the Cherokee
Fire Department, Junaluska
Animal Hospital, Western
Carolina University, Southwestern
Community College, Fairview
Elementary School, the Sylva
Herald, Skyland Care Center,
N.C. Forest Service, Buff
Creek Baptist Church, Arrowmont
Stables, Scott Rodes Buick-Pontiac-GMC,
Harris Regional Hospital,
Fantasy Travel, Webster
Child Development Center,
Coward, Hicks and Siler
law office and the Jackson
County Sheriff’s Department.
