@ your library: celebrate
National Library Week at
the SCC Library, April 14-19.
This year marks the 50th
anniversary of the National
Library Week celebration.
It's time to celebrate
the contributions of libraries,
librarians and library workers
in schools, campuses and
communities nationwide -
and time to discover how
you can join the circle
of knowledge, by bringing
your SCC ID card to the
Library and checking out
FREE magazines, videos,
books and more. Specially-designed,
commemorative bookmarks
will be given away this
week as well.
The SCC Library declared
April 14 - 19 to be its
“Amnesty Week”
and forgiving fines on all
overdue items returned during
the week - which also happens
to be SCC Registration Week,
a bonus for students! Avoid
paying fines by returning
checkouts during this week.

Why celebrate National
Library Week?
Every day, libraries in
big cities, small towns,
colleges and universities,
schools and businesses help
to transform their communities.
People of all backgrounds
can come together for community
meetings, lectures and programs,
to do research with the
assistance of a trained
professional, to get a job,
search the Internet, or
find homework help, usually
at no cost. Where else but
in libraries are all these
valuable resources provided
upon request, on a daily
basis?
First sponsored in 1958,
National Library Week is
an observance sponsored
by the American Library
Association and libraries
across the country each
April. It is a time to celebrate
the contributions of our
nation's libraries and librarians
and to promote library use
and support. All types of
libraries - school, public,
academic and special - participate.
In 1954, the ALA and the
American Book Publishers
formed a nonprofit citizens'
organization called the
National Book Committee.
Their ambitious goals ranged
from "encouraging people
to read in their increasing
leisure time" to "improving
incomes and health"
and "developing strong
and happy family life."
The first National Library
Week was sponsored by the
National Book Committee
in 1958 with the theme "Wake
Up and Read!" - based
on the idea that once people
were motivated to read,
they would support and use
libraries. ALA has continued
as the sole sponsor of National
Library week since 1994.
