Participants
gathered April 9 at Southwestern
Community College’s
Jackson Campus for the semester
finale of the Student Support
Service's Motheread/Fatheread
program. From left are Sheila
Long, Michele Coker, Kristy
Ortega, SCC dean of arts
and sciences Barb Putman,
Katie Bowman and SCC counselor
Peter Buck. SCC reading
specialist Marti Hunter,
absent from photo, introduced
the successful program to
Southwestern five years
ago. Each week participants
read one or two classic
children's books and share
their experiences of raising
or working with kids. The
books and conversation give
participants new enthusiasm
and ideas about reading
with their kids. By reading
the books together and thinking
about questions to ask children
and activities to do with
them, the program develops
literacy skills, creative
thinking, problem-solving
skills and a life-long love
of books, said Buck. (click
