will lead students
from the basics
to the most
advanced photography
techniques in
a variety of
summer workshops.

A variety of photography courses
designed to fit the needs
of the amateur and professional
alike is being offered through
Southwestern Community College's
Heritage Arts Institute this
summer. Registration fees
vary from $50 to $60, depending
on the total number hours
in the class. Most classes
are offered at SCC’s
Swain Center but some are
also offered at the Jackson
Campus.
Leading off with Photographing
People-Beyond the Snapshot,
participants will learn
the techniques of good portrait
photography. Instructor
Evelyn Barnes will explore
the use of natural light
and cover the very basics
of using flash, how to pose
people, the candid portrait
and the environmental portrait.
Students will need a 35mm
camera for the workshop.
Bring your film or digital
camera and the manual to
this class which will include
lecture, demonstration,
a field trip and critique.
Earn 0.6 CEUs in this three-meeting
class which will meet on
Sundays June 1 and 8 from
3-5 p.m. and Monday, June
23, from 6-8 p.m. at the
SCC
Swain Center.
Basic Digital will
be taught on Tuesday evenings,
beginning June 3, from 6-9
p.m. Designed for the beginning
student in photography,
this basic camera and photography
class can very well be the
first step in developing
professional level skills
as a photographer. Using
a digital single lens reflex
camera, participants will
learn to take control of
their camera and be creative
with it. Topics include
camera functions and controls,
how to design an image,
digital camera menus and
memory cards, introduction
to downloading, sizing and
e-mailing images. Image
editing and printing will
also be covered. Bring your
camera and manual to this
class which will include
lecture, demonstration,
and critique. Earn 3.6 CEUs
in this 12-meeting class
at the SCC
Swain Center.
Beginning June 4, Wednesday
evenings from 6-8 p.m. are
for craft artists
and others who
need to learn to photograph
their work for publishing,
either to the web or for
entry into festivals or
guilds. In Photography-Lessons
for the Craft Artist learn
how to photograph 3-dimensional
artwork to produce professional
quality images to submit
to galleries, guilds, and
festivals. The workshop
covers the equipment involved,
lighting choices and output
options. Basic image editing
and color management will
also be discussed. Students
will need a 35mm digital
camera for the workshop.
Bring your camera and the
manual to this class which
will include lecture, demonstration,
a field trip and critique.
Earn 1.0 CEUs in this 4-meeting
class at the SCC
Swain Center.
Thursday evenings beginning
June 5 take students back
to basics with Photography-Basic
Black and White Darkroom.
Designed to teach the basics
of film processing, printing,
and mounting, this class
goes far beyond that and
offers an adventure in science
and art. The class includes
lectures, demonstrations,
assignments, lab time and
critique. Bring a 35MM film
camera for this class and
the manual,if you have it.
Earn 3.6 CEUs in this 12-week
class that meets on the
Jackson Campus from 6-9
p.m.
Additional photography
workshops scheduled for
this summer include Photographing
Fireworks, Capturing Waterfalls,
Low- Light and Night Photography,
and the ABCs of Photography.
Evelyn Barnes, SCC's adjunct
instructor in this new program,
comes with many years experience
in professional photography
both as a photographer and
an instructor. In addition
to being featured in many
exhibits in Atlanta, she
has shown her work in Sicily,
Stockholm and England and
been featured in Seattle,
Pacific Grove, Pensacola
and New York City.
