Cheyenne Mathis, right,
splashes into algebra class
during Southwestern Community
College’s Upward Bound
summer program. Along with
instructor Angela Myers,
left, Mathis learns that
grades do make a difference.
“Only it’s not
letter grades; it’s
the grade of the slope,”
said this Smoky Mountain
High School junior. As part
of their algebra class,
the water slide demonstrated
momentum, distance, rate
and time, said Myers. “I
learned that my velocity
was based not only on the
length and grade of the
slide, but on my weight,”
said Mathis, who is in her
third year of the college
preparatory program. Upward
Bound helps students transition
to college and, in addition
to the summer program, provides
them support throughout
the school year. “They
help me fill out scholarship
applications, practice testing
for the SAT, visit colleges,
go job shadowing and tutor
me when I need help,”
Mathis described the program.
