Community college graduates
will soon have an easier
path to many private colleges
and universities.
Community College System
President Scott Ralls and
Independent Colleges and
Universities President Hope
Williams signed an articulation
agreement July 15 to help
students successfully transfer
to 24 specific private colleges
and universities in the
state.
"This agreement is
an indication of the collaborative
relationship that exists
between our institutions
and helps to provide a more
seamless transition for
our community college students
to a four-year degree,"
said Ralls.
That seamless transition
already exists between the
colleges and universities
in the UNC system, said
Southwestern Community College
President Cecil Groves.
That agreement, which went
into effect in 1997, guarantees
junior status for transferring
students.
“The new agreement
certainly expands the opportunities
we can provide for our existing
and potential students,”
said Groves.
“Our graduates can
now step out their door
and easily transfer to just
about any college or university
in the state,” said
Connie Haire, vice president
of SCC’s
Macon Campus.
“Before our students
could successfully transfer
to the 16 public colleges
and universities in the
state and now their options
have increased to include
24 private institutions.
That’s 40 schools
now they can choose. This
new partnership certainly
increases their options.”
“Out of the 58 colleges
in the State Community College
System, Southwestern ranks
as one of the top three
colleges in performance
of college transfer students,”
said Groves. “We have
a vigorous college
transfer program that
prepares our students well
for their baccalaureate
experience. We are so proud
of how well students from
our region perform throughout
the state- and their success
is recognized statewide.”
The new agreement will
certainly benefit students
in this region, Groves and
Haire agreed.
One of major benefits is
a heightened opportunity
to meet the growing demand
for teachers, nurses, and
engineers. A targeted development
of transfer and two-plus-two
programs will bring advanced
degrees to community college
campuses in these three
critical workforce areas.
While 24 of the 36 private
colleges and universities
are signatories on the agreement,
the other 12 institutions
have existing bilateral
agreements with individual
community colleges that
remain in effect.

the NC Independent Colleges
and Universities are Barton
