Science Olympiad

Smoky Mountain High School’s Science Olympiad team

Smoky Mountain High School’s Science Olympiad team competed in the 2009 Science Olympiad regional competition recently at UNC-Asheville. The team is supported in part through the assistance of Southwestern Community College’s GEAR UP program, which focuses on helping students become college-ready. Smoky Mountain was one of eight high school teams participating in the competition and this was the school’s second year competing. The following team members received medals for competitive events: 1st in Forensics to seniors Caitie Stehling and Emily Butcher, 1st in Physics to Caitie Stehling and senior Sammy Matthews, 2nd in Dynamic Planet to freshman Connor Davis and sophomore Kaysie Allen, 3rd in Experimental Design to Caitie Stehling and Emily Butcher, 3rd in Remote Sensing to senior Matt Dougherty and Connor Davis, and 3rd in Trajectory to Matt Dougherty and Sammy Matthews. Team members Annelise Davis, David Ford, Jason Frizzell, and Chelsea White also participated. Brent Lance, Science Olympiad coach, attended summer and fall training institutes to prepare for the competition.
