The Jackson County commissioners
approved the appointment of
Charles D. Leatherman to the
Southwestern Community College
Board of Trustees at their
July 2009 meeting. Leatherman
was recommended by the Macon
County commissioners.
A graduate of Franklin
High School, Leatherman
is a United States Army
veteran, serving three overseas
tours of duty. He graduated
from Western Carolina University
with a degree in education
with concentrations in math
and gifted education.
Leatherman has served numerous
roles in county boards and
advisory committees. He
served as a Macon County
commissioner from 2000 to
2008, including two years
as commission chair. He
also served two terms as
the District 17 director
of the North Carolina Association
of County Commissioners.
He currently serves on
the Macon County Fair Association
Board of Directors, the
Tom Raby Memorial Scholarship
Fund, the Wayne Profitt
Memorial Scholarship Fund
and the Smoky Mountain Area
Mental Health Board of Directors
for the 15 western counties.
Employed by the Macon County
School System, Leatherman
is the only currently active
public education teacher
serving on the SCC board.
He is also owner/operator
of Leatherman Tax Service.
A native of Macon County,
he is married to the former
Melissa Moore and they are
the parents of three sons,
Lucas, Miciah and Gabriel.

Southwestern Community College
to the point it provides
quality educational opportunities
that makes it the fourth
best institution in its
class in the United States.”
said Leatherman. “It
speaks well for the administration,
faculty, staff, students,
curriculum and overall operation
of the institution. I am
honored to be associated
with an organization and
individuals of that caliber.”
Cecil Groves, president
of SCC, stated he was pleased
with the appointment of
Leatherman to the SCC board.
“Mr. Leatherman brings
a wealth of experience both
in and outside education,
extending from public service
as an elected official to
leadership on various boards
and committees as well as
his obvious support and
encouragement of the community
college.”
Conrad Burrell, chairman
of the SCC board agreed.
He noted, “Charlie’s
experience in leadership,
business and education will
be a valuable addition to
our board. We are pleased
to have him join us.”
SCC is governed by a local
board of trustees within
the framework of the Community
Colleges Act.
