FIRST LEGO League
teams from the Western North
Carolina counties are invited
to participate in the 2009
FIRST LEGO League Competition
to be held Nov. 21 at Western
Carolina University in the
Ramsey Center’s auxiliary
gym. The one-day competition
will take place from 8 a.m.
to 4 p.m. and will consist
of technical judging, teamwork,
research presentation and
table runs. The competition
is a cooperative endeavor
of GEAR UP, Southwestern Community
College, and Western Carolina
University and is offered
free of charge.
The first competitive event
for FIRST teams
was in 1992 with 28 teams
competing and now involves
more than 150,000 students.
On Sept. 3, the “Smart
Move” Challenge was
issued by FIRST
LEGO League, 11 years after
FIRST founder Dean Kamen
and the LEGO Group’s
Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen joined
forces to create FIRST
LEGO LEAGUE. FLL engages
younger children in playful
and meaningful learning
while helping them to discover
the fun in science and technology
through the FIRST experience,
according to GEAR UP’s
Sherry Tilson, event coordinator.
Tilson said teams interested
in competing can go to www.usfirst.org
and complete a 2009 team
profile. Send a copy of
your team profile to Tilson
at stilson@southwesterncc.edu.
She will confirm receipt
and forward additional information
about the Nov. 21 meet.
For more information about
First Lego League, go to
www.usfirst.org
or contact Tilson at (828)
524-3766, ext. 308.
Deadline for submission
is Nov. 1.
