Southwestern Community College
GEAR UP collaborated with
the Jackson County School
of Alternatives in Sylva to
help fund new technology for
the school. GEAR UP and the
JCPS technology department
teamed up to equip a computer
lab to boost college readiness,
provide student engagement
in both academic learning
and vocational/life planning
and offer enrichment experiences.
Students at the school built
desks for the equipment, painted
the new lab space and created
a mural of the GEAR UP logo.
GEAR UP staff members are
now teaching a college study
skills and career management
and exploration class in the
new lab, which also supports
language arts classes for
the high school, as well as
various middle school classes.
Other technology provided
by the JCPS technology department
and GEAR UP includes Promethean
Boards in every middle and
high school classroom.
GEAR UP Coordinator Robin
Hall said, “The combined
effort of the staff of GEAR
UP, the Jackson County Technology
Department, the administration,
faculty, staff and students
at the School of Alternatives
has solidified the School
of Alternative's commitment
to becoming a ‘college-ready’
school.”
She added, “The students
and teachers demonstrate a
renewed sense of pride in
their school and in each other.
It's amazing what a little
collaboration and cooperative
effort among organizations
with common goals can accomplish.
We are looking forward to
the great things to come from
these students.”
