Coffee celebrates GEAR UP Day |
The Jackson GEAR UP staff
hosts coffee at Fairview Elementary
School.
In celebration of National
GEAR UP Day and in commemoration
of 10 years of successful
GEAR UP programs, Southwestern
Community College’s
Jackson County GEAR UP staff
hosted a morning coffee at
Fairview Elementary School.
The coffee introduced approximately
90 faculty and staff to the
program.
According to the National
Council for Community and
Education Partnerships, GEAR
UP Day commemorates ten years
of success for the transformative
Gaining Early Awareness and
Education for Undergraduate
Programs, a college access
program created during the
Clinton Administration. Since
its inception in 1999, GEAR
UP has improved educational
outcomes for millions of low-income
students across the United
States. The program is now
active in 46 states and four
U.S. territories.
The Jackson County staff’s
goal was to celebrate GEAR
UP’s presence in the
county’s schools for
the past ten years and to
expand the educational community’s
awareness of the program for
the future. The Jackson GEAR
UP staff currently serves
1,130 middle and high school
students at Smokey Mountain
Elementary, Scotts Creek Elementary,
the School of Alternatives,
Smoky Mountain High School
and envisions serving all
students in Jackson County
through a third grant being
submitted in 2010.
“We
give special thanks to Food
Lion of Sylva for generously
donating breakfast items to
the event,” GEAR UP
Jackson County Coordinator
Robin Hall said. From left

Vyanne Fisher, Della Reeves
and Carolyn Pannell, Fairview
