Western Carolina University
to attend the annual Reaching
to Teach Conference. Jessica
Garner, the 2009-2010 AT&T
NC Teacher of the Year was
the keynote speaker. Students
chose from sessions including
Reasons to Become a WCU
Teaching Fellow, Diversity
in the Classroom, Why Don’t
Students Like School?, I Want
to Go to College!, Foreign
Language Teaching, Teaching
Math Can Be Fun!, and
$ for Educators.
Conference participants ate
at the new Courtyard Dining
Hall to experience part of
the college life.
The Teachers of Tomorrow
Club at Swain County High
School is sponsored by GEAR
UP, a Southwestern Community
College program that encourages
college readiness.

address was especially relevant
for our students, because
she spoke about making the
classrooms of the 21st century
tech-savvy and more culturally
aware so young Americans
leave school prepared to
collaborate and compete
with people all over the
world,” said Erin
McCully, sponsor of the
Teachers of Tomorrow Club
and GEAR UP college readiness
coach at Swain High.
Students in attendance
were freshmen Abbe Kirby
and Ashton Turbyfill , sophomores
Natalie Fisher, Jared Turbyfill,
and Evan Sneed, juniors
Megan Hall, Becca Hawken,
Rebecca Parris, Chelsea
Treadway, and Billie West,
and senior Jasmine Winchester.
