Hands in Deep Creek |
Recently, Cherokee Middle
School 7th grade students
like Nick Hill, left, and
Taylor Davis, braved the cold
weather and engaged in a hands-on
water quality study of Deep
Creek in Great Smoky Mountains
National Park. Led by the
park rangers, students tested
pH and turbidity, dissolved
oxygen levels, and searched
for macroinvertebrates using
special nets. After recording
their findings in the data
table, students concluded
that Deep Creek is healthy.
The trip was organized by
7th grade Science Teacher
Carol West, and sponsored
by Southwestern Community
College GEAR UP. SCC GEAR
UP College Readiness Coach
Liddell Shannon said, “This
educational field trip offers
the students an opportunity
to experience academically-challenging
curricula [including] biology,
chemistry, and earth science,
in a magnificent natural setting.
They come away from the trip
with technical knowledge of
their surroundings, an understanding
of what they can do to promote
environmental stewardship,
and the added benefit of a
day spent outdoors."
