Smoky and sweet recipe wins 1st place
for SCC students in chili cook off

Culinary students win 1st prize in Sylva's chili fest

Two brothers, both Southwestern Community College culinary technology students, won first place in the Professional Category of the Downtown Sylva Association’s 2nd Annual Chilly Fest Saturday, Oct. 10. Brandon Cope, left, current student and sous chef at the Millstone Inn in Cashiers, and his brother, Dusty Cope, right, a 2004 SCC graduate and executive chef at Millstone Inn, won with their venison specialty. “We wanted folks to taste the smokiness and feistiness of the venison first, then finish off the taste with the sweetness of mango and crème fraiche,” Dusty said of their winning recipe.

SCC admissions officer Dominique Benson served on the planning committee for the Chilly Fest and said more than “350 people, including 14 cooks, braved the wet weather to take part in the chili cook-off.” In addition to the Professional Category, other winners were: Amateur - Jack and Tammy Kimmel; People’s Choice - Ross Lorenz and John Ballato of Restaurant 553; Best Booth in Show - Charlene McAlister-Pell of Aurora Professional Designers Guild.

Hank Shuler, director of SCC’s Heritage Arts Institute, donated two sets of four chili bowls for the winners.
