GEAR UP tours WCU |
Recently, 64 freshmen from
Swain County High School visited
Western Carolina University
for a tour arranged by Southwestern
Community College GEAR UP,
a discretionary grant program
sponsored by the US Department
of Education designed to increase
the number of students who
are prepared to enter and
succeed in postsecondary education.
The students toured a dorm,
visited academic buildings
and saw the Pride of the Mountains
Marching Band practicing in
the stadium. They also visited
the campus bookstore and picked
up free newspapers in other
languages. “Not only
were the students really engaged
in the tour, they really represented
Swain High School well,”
said GEAR UP College Readiness
Coach Erin McCully. The trip
to Western Carolina University
is one of six college trips
for which many freshmen were
able to sign up; upcoming
trips include Southwestern
Community College, Brevard
College, the University of
Tennessee and Mars Hill College.
