Frozen eyelids and struck by lightning
The Women’s Appalachian Trail Record Holder and Blue Ridge Outdoors 2008 Outdoors Person of the Year, Jennifer Pharr Davis, right, demonstrates her gear to interested hikers during a presentation Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Southwestern Community College. Davis completed the AT, which spans 14 states, in 57 days, eight hours and 35 minutes, averaging 38 miles a day. “I loved the simplicity of the adventure because everything you need, you carry on your back,” she told, from left, SCC outdoor leadership students Emily Luebs of Bryson City and Will Butler of Whittier and SCC arts and science instructor Chad Hallyburton. Hallyburton, who is the record holder on SCC’s hiking trail, said he was impressed with the lessons Davis learned on the trail and how her experience restored her faith in humanity because of the kindness of people she met along the way. “It wasn’t easy,” Davis told the large crowd in attendance. “Much of it was a struggle, like the time my eyes froze shut in a blizzard, or when I was struck by lightning. But I kept visualizing the finish and that visualization kept me going.” The event was part of SCC’s Discover America Series.
