Human Rites…the Body
and the Blood artwork by Luzene
Hill, program outreach coordinator
for the Oconaluftee Institute
of Cultural Arts, is featured
at the University of North
Carolina Asheville Highsmith
Gallery as part of Domestic
Violence Awareness Month.
Hill will talk at the Visualizing
Human Rights Anti-Conference
at 1 p.m. Saturday,
Nov. 14, at the
gallery. Her work is on
display through that date
and can be seen Monday-Friday
from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday
9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday,
noon-6 p.m.
The announcement for the
event reads, “Luzene
Hill’s work is fragile
and fleeting, reflecting
her view of the tentative
nature of human existence.
Vulnerability, transformation
and the process of change
are recurring theme. Her
work is often informed by
her Cherokee heritage and
serves as a metaphor for
a broad Native American
and female experience. Political,
but quietly, so Hill’s
work confronts life, its
ambiguity, paradox, uncertainty.”
