Southwestern Community College’s
Heritage Arts Institute announces
their winter and spring offerings
in pottery classes. According
to Stacy France, the program’s
new director, “We’ve
designed the new schedule
to accommodate all levels
of students and to showcase
our new manabigama wood-fire
kiln.
“We at SCC are very
proud of our clay program
and the facilities we’ve
been able to assemble in support
of the program. The manabigama
is our latest kiln addition,
bringing us 8 different kilns
to add to the depth of our
pottery training,” said
France.
“Of course we could
not have accomplished what
we have without the support
of Swain County, the Blue
Ridge National Heritage Area,
SCC’s top management,
and, of course ,our students
who support us in the studio
and promote the program outside
the studio,” said France.
Centrally located in SCC’s
pottery studios in the SCC
Swain Center, students enjoy
one of the best pottery facilities
in the state and the ambience
provided by the old Almond
School. The Swain Center,
where all Heritage Art pottery
classes are taught, is just
25 miles from Sylva, Franklin,
and Robbinsville.
Joe Frank McKee of Tree House
Pottery in Dillsboro will
be teaching a class in wood-firing
where students can elect to
use soda- firing. The class
is designed for intermediate
to advanced level students
who can use either wheel throwing
or hand-building techniques.
It will focus on forms, flashes,
and glazes suitable for the
manabigama, in addition to
the actual firing process.
This 16-week class meets twice
a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays
from 6-9 p.m.
Elise Delfield will be teaching
a special project class for
intermediate to advanced level.
With the approval of the instructor,
students will develop their
own objectives for this course
to include goals and production
schedules. This 16-week class
meets on Wednesdays from 9
a.m.-4 p.m. beginning Jan.
6.
Several opportunities for
students seeking basic, fundamental
skills are provided in the
upcoming schedule. Delfield
teaches basic and intermediate
16-week wheel courses beginning
Jan. 5. Students will complete
several projects including
cylinders, mugs, bowls, and
pitchers; exploring glaze
techniques and ceramic vocabulary.
The class meets on Tuesday
and Thursday evenings from
6-9 p.m.
Joe Frank McKee teaches three
basic courses in the upcoming
schedule. All three classes
meet twice a week on Tuesdays
and Thursdays from 2-5 p.m.
Leading off with Extruded
Forms, this 4-week class begins
Jan. 5. It enables the pottery
students to use the clay extruder
to create a variety of forms
including such things as tumblers,
vases, lamps, umbrella stands
and birdhouses.
McKee teaches a 4-week raku
firing class beginning Feb
9. Designed for all levels
and for both hand building
and wheel throwing, this class
will introduce basic students
and provide more complex skills
for the intermediate and advanced
level student.
McKee will teach a 4-week
course in platters. Beginning
March 16, basic students will
learn to build platters with
the use of a slab roller.
Intermediate and advanced
students can choose between
hand-building or throwing
platters.
Doug Hubbs will teach four
4-week basic courses in the
new schedule. All fours classes
meet twice a week on Tuesdays
and Thursdays from 2-5 p.m.
A class in tumblers, mugs,
and goblets leads the schedule
on Jan 5. A basic course to
teach students to create drinking
vessels through the construction
of cylinders, students will
also begin to acquire skills
in glazing.
Salsa, soup and serving bowls
class will begin Feb. 9. Having
fun in this basic class, students
will complete several projects.
A class in pots – the
basic shape for vases and
pitchers – begins on
March 16. In addition to firing
in the electric kilns, students
will have the opportunity
to complete horsehair and
raku firings.
The lidded vessel becomes
the topic of a class starting
on April 20. Sugar bowls,
candy dishes, casseroles and
other forms require lids to
finish them. This class will
stretch the student’s
skills further.
