Recently, the Cherokee Middle
School 7th Grade class traveled
to Asheville to visit The
Health Adventure museum, where
they participated in the Robotics
Design and Mind Benders Programs.
The trip was sponsored by
Southwestern Community College
GEAR UP, a program funded
by the U.S. Department of
Education to raise student
preparedness for post-secondary
education and strengthen career
awareness. Students explored
the need for robotics in modern
way of life and industry through
the Robotics Design program
and worked in small groups
to design and build robots
to perform simple tasks. Then
students went to the Mind
Benders Mansion portion of
the museum and participated
in hands-on challenges that
encourage students to discover
answers to problems based
on math skills and deductive
reasoning. The Health Adventures
Robotics Design and Mindbenders
Programs promote Science,
Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics concepts to encourage
students to use high-level
reasoning skills while engaging
in hands-on activities that
are fun and educational. “We
believe that the STEM principles
are important for helping
students become college-ready
in today’s world,”
GEAR UP Coordinator Susan
Lanier said.
