Academic Awards ceremony honors elite students

Richard Sneed, Principal Chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, served as guest speaker as more than 250 students were honored during the Academic Awards Ceremony that was held on April 19 at Southwestern Community College’s Jackson Campus.

Among the honorees were 51 “Students of Distinction” as well as a handful of individual award winners.

Trevor Gates of Webster received the “Bob Scott Leadership Award,” which is named after the former N.C. governor who also served as president of the state’s community college system for 12 years.

Angela Beck  of Cullowhee won the “Dallas Herring Achievement Award,” which bears the name of one of the state’s earliest advocates for community colleges.

The Charlie McConnell New Century Scholar Award recipient was Olivia Perkins of Franklin, and Veronic Judson of Webster was named the N.C. Community College System Academic Excellence recipient for SCC.

Rotary Students of the Month were Kimberly Bailey of Franklin, Alexandria Crisp of Bryson City, Cory Gates of Waynesville and Amanda Stafford of Tuckasegee.

To qualify for the “Academic Honors” portion of the program, each student had to earn a minimum of 30 semester hours of credit within the last four years by the end of the fall semester at SCC, be enrolled in the spring semester and have a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.5 or above.
