Faculty Guest Speakers at North Carolina Criminal Justice Association
Fall Meeting -
Richard Hayes, Senior Analyst with the Governor's Crime Commission
met Kirk Stephens and Mike Burnette, SCC Cyber Crime Technology
instructors, at the North Carolina Justice Academy West meeting
recruiting students for their program. He was so intrigued to
find such a program existed that he asked them to speak at the
North Carolina Criminal Justice Association fall meeting (NCCJA).

couple joins two SCC Honor Societies - Shortly
after getting married four years ago, Nick and Beverly Altman
had a serious discussion about their lives. "We
were working and making just enough money to get by," said
Altman. "We knew we didn't want to live like that forever,

students inducted into SCC's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society
- Last month, Southwestern Community College's chapter of the
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society inducted 22 new members at a ceremony
held in Bradford Hall on the College's Jackson Campus.

Southwestern's
National Vocational-Technical Honor Society inducts 33 members
- Thirty-three students were recently
inducted into Southwestern Community College's National Vocational-Technical
Honor Society (NV-THS). The NV-THS induction ceremony was held
at SCC's Jackson Campus last month. The honor society is an opportunity
for high-achieving students to be recognized for their academic
achievement. Students who hold a 3.5 or better grade point average
and have completed at least 12 hours of college-level academic
course work are eligible to be nominated by faculty.

Foundation Golf Tourney Winners Announced -
The
Southwestern Community College Foundation hosted their 14th-annual
Fall Foursome golf tournament on Monday, Oct. 14 at the Waynesville
Country Club and Golf Resort. First place winners were: Sue Bumgarner,
Gary Ramey, Gary Peek and Steve Peek. Second-place winners were:
Raye Parker, Noland Smathers, Jeff Carswell and Carl Bartlett.
Third place winners were Michael Smith, Russell Hoyle, Russ Seagle
and Jim Moore.

Robert
Blanton Scholarship. When Robert
Blanton passed away in September 1999, Southwestern Community
College lost a long-time trustee; the community lost a valuable
friend; and his family lost a wonderful, loving husband and father.
Even while the grief was fresh in their hearts, Robert's family
asked their minister to notify the SCC Foundation that they would
like to set up a scholarship in his memory.
