SCC Graduate Realizes Ivy League Dreams - After graduating from Southwestern Community College with associate degrees in accounting and business administration, maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA and then going on to pursue a degree from Cornell University as a single parent of two children, Alexis Bell has one message for anyone who feels intimidated about returning to school, "If you believe in yourself don't let fear stop you. Feel it, acknowledge it and move through it." Bell's sentiment is a testament to her own experiences in life and as a student.

SCC Hosts Pinning Ceremony for Radiography Graduates - Fourteen Southwestern Community College radiography students recently received their school pins at the annual pinning ceremony. Each of the candidates was also awarded an Associate of Applied Science degree in Radiography at the commencement ceremony last Friday evening.

SCC Physical Therapy Assistant Program Holds Pinning Ceremony - Eight Southwestern Community College physical therapy assistant students recently received their school pins at the annual pinning ceremony. Each of the candidates was also awarded an Associate of Applied Science degree in Physical Therapy Assistant at the commencement ceremony last Friday, May 9.

Over 275 Graduate from SCC Last Friday - Being a parent of two teenagers and working three jobs was not enough of an excuse for Michelle Frizzell. While some gave her absolute encouragement, others told her it was simply too much to take on. But, Frizzell believed in herself enough to go after it and last Friday night, her dream came true.

Smoky Mountain Chevrolet donates $2,000 in parts to SCC - Smoky Mountain Chevrolet-Oldsmobile recently donated more than $2,000 in parts and accessories to the Automotive Systems Technology program at Southwestern Community College. SCC offers Escort Vehicle Operator Certification Course - Effective July 1, all escort vehicle operators will be required to obtain an NCDOT approved certification prior to performing the duties of an oversize/overweight load escort vehicle operator in NC. ( . . details)

Nine from SCC Recalled to Active Duty - Two SCC staff members spent a couple of hours last week tying 24 yellow ribbons to the trees that line the College's campus. Army PFC Joseph Dwan was one of eight students at Southwestern who recently traded in textbooks for artillery due to the war in Iraq.

SCC Student's e-Business Prospers Worldwide - When Joan Lee was a little girl, she knew exactly what she wanted to be when she grew up-- a fashion designer. As a child, she would spend hours on end sewing and designing new styles of clothing and accessories. But at the age of 60, Lee was beginning to see her dreams and aspirations fade. SCC Receives Lithograph in Memory of Student - Members of the Native American Society Club presented the college with a lithograph, donated by the Museum of Cherokee Indian, in memory of classmate Deanah McCoy. McCoy was a student in the General Occupational Technology program at SCC from 1998-2000.

Southwestern Community College Selected for Rural Community College Initiative - Southwestern Community College has formed a partnership with two other western Carolina community colleges, Haywood Community College and Tri-County Community College, and this partnership has been selected to be part of a national Rural Community College Initiative (RCCI) demonstration project funded by the Ford Foundation. Scripps wins "Best Business Plan" for SCC's R.E.A.L. program - When Nina Scripps decided to attend Southwestern Community College's Rural Entrepreneurship through Action Learning (R.E.A.L.) Retreat she had no idea how life changing the experience would be. ( . . full story)

Southwestern's Swain Center, which currently resides in the Almond School building, is undergoing $400,000 in renovations. This project will be the last piece of a ten-year mission to completely renovate the building. Funding for the project was provided from the 2000 NC Community College Bond Referendum and does not require matching dollars from Swain County. ( . . read article)
