Responds to Acute Teacher Shortage - Southwestern
Community College recently received approval to offer three pre-major
programs to offset the demand for teachers. Beginning this spring,
SCC will offer pre-major degrees in art education; English education;
and elementary, middle grades and special education. The programs
will allow students to facilitate a smooth transition to education
programs at four-year state institutions. (

Selected for NC Community College Leadership Program - Barb
Putman, Southwestern Community College's director of academic
support, was recently selected to participate in the NC Community
College Leadership Program. Putman, a resident of Franklin, was
one of 34 participants selected from a field of 65 applicants
for this year's class.

Life Lessons" - Senior College, a Southwestern Community
College program provided at 12 local long-term care facilities.
The program, which is funded through Harrah's Cherokee Casino,
offers hands-on activities to stimulate residents' minds and bodies.
The activities range from soap making to woodworking and storytelling
