Hicks Urges Students to Diversify - Back on
campus recently to speak to the Native American Society,
Michell Hicks, principal chief of the Eastern Band of
Cherokee and a 1990 graduate of Southwestern Community
College, urged students to diversify. Hicks told members
of the campus group that he originally graduated from
Western Carolina University in 1987 with a bachelor
of science degree in business management then decided
he wanted to broaden his degree in accounting. (

Maintenance-Grounds Crew's Generosity Recognized - Members
of the SCC Maintenance-Grounds department were recently
recognized by the NC Army National Guard for "outstanding
meritorious service to Detachment 1, 210th Military
Police Company in Sylva." According to the certificates
of recognition each of them received, during the unit's
deployment to Iraq, "the Maintenance-Grounds Section
exemplified the true meaning of the good neighbor by
regularly mowing and performing other maintenance tasks
to the Armory grounds." (

Experience
with Helicopter part of SCC Paramedic Training -
The unmistakable sound of a helicopter filled the air
recently at SCC as a group of students waited excitedly
on the ground for the arrival of Memorial Mission Hospitals’
MAMA helicopter from Asheville. After the machine touched
down, first- and second-year Emergency Medical Science
students quickly gathered around to begin training in
scene team operations for loading and unloading patients
for helicopter transport. (

Mail Carrier Gives Thanks - This Thanksgiving, Richard
Middleton and his 18-year-old daughter, Aimee, have
special reason to be thankful. It’s all about
sharing. In fact, this father and daughter share a kidney.
“I’m feeling on top of the world. It’s
such a great feeling to know I saved somebody’s
life, especially my own daughter,” said Richard,
who donated his kidney to Aimee. (

Student Receives New Century Scholar Drew Hamilton Award
- Doug
Allen, a freshman at Smoky Mountain High School, is
this year's recipient of the New Century
Scholars Drew Hamilton Award of Excellence. Presented
annually, the award recognizes outstanding achievement
in academics, citizenship, leadership, and volunteerism.
In addition to maintaining high academic standards,
Allen has served as a volunteer with REACH of Jackson
County and Jackson County Little League, tutored students
at the Fairview Success Center, and participated in
Asthma Walk. Doug is the son of Doug and Tammy Allen
of Tuckasegee. (

Student Receives State Organization’s Scholarship
- A Surveying
Technology student is the first from SCC to receive
a scholarship from the NC Association of Community College
Facility Operations. Nathan Hall of Balsam, a second
year student in the surveying program, was presented
a $1000 scholarship Tuesday, November 10, 2004, at the
college. Present were his instructor Peter Messier and
Dennis Wilkey, Coordinator of Buildings and Grounds
and an NCACCFO member. (

Running
26 miles on Halloween might seem scary to most folks
but for Annette Kesgen the feat celebrated a milestone.
Kesgen ran in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington,
D.C., on Oct. 31 to commemorate being cancer-free for
one year.

Haynes of Sylva has been named executive director of
the Southwestern Community College Foundation.
Haynes came to SCC from Macon Bank in Sylva where she
was employed as city executive. She currently serves
on the Jackson County Chamber Board, is vice-chair for
Mountain Projects' Board and treasurer of Sylva's Rotary
Club. Haynes holds a B.S. in Computer Information Systems
from WCU, is a licensed insurance salesperson and holds
a series 6 and 63 brokerage license. (
