award - Andrew McAllister
of Franklin, who was a Southwestern
Community College dual enrolled
and home-schooled student,
won a Jack Kent Cooke undergraduate
transfer scholarship. The
announcement came today (June
21) from Matthew Quinn, executive
director of the Lansdowne,
Va.-based foundation. McAllister
was one of 51 scholars across
the country to be selected
and has been invited to attend
the awards ceremony for the
recipients on Aug. 2 in Washington,

Heritage Arts Institute
Expands program -
The center just received a
$23,000 grant from
the Blue Ridge National Heritage
Area to expand the Institute’s
pottery offerings into such
areas as high fire gas, salt
and raku firing. This expansion
will be made possible through
the construction of a 864-square-foot
kiln shed that will house
three kilns, a glaze mixing
area and a washing area. It
will be built adjacent to
the two existing pottery studios
which include 21 pottery wheels,
two low-fire electric kilns
and hand-building space and

Kinematic GPS System. With
it, our students use information

The
inaugeral Mountain Region
FIRST LEGO League Robotics
Competition will be held at
SCC on Saturday, January 20.
In September students from
four Western North Carolina
school systems took on the
challenge to design and build
an original robot in the FIRST
LEGO League (FLL) International
program. On January 20, their
months of research and design
will culminate in the inaugural
Mountain Region FIRST LEGO
League Robotics Competition.
