SCC earns superior college rating - Southwestern Community College ranks as one of 38 institutions in the 58-college North Carolina Community College System to receive the superior college designation in 2007. SCC earned this distinction based on its achievement in meeting performance measure standards utilized by the North Carolina General Assembly to assess state community colleges. This is the second consecutive year Southwestern earned the superior college rating. » full story

Andrew McAllister wins prestigious national awardSCC grad wins prestigious national award - Andrew McAllister of Franklin, who was a Southwestern Community College dual enrolled and home-schooled student, won a Jack Kent Cooke undergraduate transfer scholarship. The announcement came today (June 21) from Matthew Quinn, executive director of the Lansdowne, Va.-based foundation. McAllister was one of 51 scholars across the country to be selected and has been invited to attend the awards ceremony for the recipients on Aug. 2 in Washington, D.C. » full story

NEW Career Readiness Certificate Unveiled - SCC joins 34 other North Carolina community colleges as an official sponsor and Career Readiness Certificate Revealedsite for the new Career Readiness Certificate initiative to train and certify the state’s workforce. Pam Gobel with the NC Community College System unveiled the program during a campus meeting June 19 with representatives from SCC, the public schools, local business and industry and others from the community. » full story

Doug Hobbs, instructor at SCC's Heritage Arts InstituteThe roster of contributing artists continues to grow for the 9th annual Mountain Shapes and Colors Art Sale to be held on Saturday, July 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Southwestern Community College’s Swain Center. Blood droplets help solve crime - Bloodstains may look gruesome to someone viewing a crime scene but to an investigator the stains reveal clues, students inNaschia Lambert - CSI West Summer Science Day Camp Southwestern Community College’s CSI West Summer Science Day Camp learned. "A bloodstain can tell you the force involved in an impact, the location of the victim and even the sequence of events,” Naschia Lambert of Cherokee learned in her lab analysis. A rising junior at Cherokee High School, Lambert attended the camp last year and said she learned so much and had so much fun that’s why she returned this summer. » full story

Leslie HowellProgram Needs Help - Leslie Howell, a high school dropout, earned her GED in April and has enrolled for the fall in the Hotel and Restaurant Management program at SCC. Funding for the successful GED program at Jackson County Family Resource Center, which has helped others like Howell for the past eight years, runs out the end of June. High school students get a head start on college - Many families worry about how to pay for college once their children graduate from high school. However, more and more motivated high school students are ‘starting college early’ and doing it all tuition free while still in high school. These students have saved thousands of dollars in college expenses. They have done this by enrolling in Southwestern Community College’s Current Enrollment Program. » full story

Caterpillar donated $75,000 to SCCCaterpillar of Franklin donated $75,000 to Southwestern Community College to equip computer labs in the new Macon Campus. It’s the largest donation the precision seals company has ever made, said Sonja Haynes, SCC foundation director. Connie Haire, vice president of the Macon Campus, said the generous gift will be used to equip three computer labs. » full story

Newcomers Club awards scholarshipNewcomers Club scholarship awarded - Members of the Newcomers Club of Jackson County presented a scholarship to Gladys Mogensen, center, to attend Southwestern Community College. The Newcomers Club gives the award to a student who has moved here but must pay out-of-state tuition. SCC held two commencement ceremonies - During its spring commencement May 10, Southwestern Community College held two ceremonies to accommodate the 204 graduates. The 5:30 p.m. ceremony honored graduates of the arts and science and health sciences divisions while the 7:30 p.m. ceremony honored graduates of the career technologies division. Both ceremonies were held in the Balsam Center Auditorium on the Jackson Campus.  » details

SCC, WCU partner on new program
- The heads of Southwestern SCC, WCU partner on new programCommunity College and Western Carolina University signed an agreement on Monday (April 23) for a new partnership that will help students who are not quite ready for college-level courses at Western to prepare for full admittance. SCC will provide testing and instructional services in reading for students enrolled in WCU’s Academic Success Program, which is offered on WCU’s Cullowhee campus during a five-week session each summer. » full story

With the installation of an ultra-speed fiber optic network, Sylva-based BalsamWest FiberNET bridged the digital divide in Western North Carolina connecting this region with the rest of the world. Hannah LevinSCC will offer two courses in its Heritage Arts Institute in March. These include a hand-building class in ceramics and a course in festival planning, execution and participation. The nine-week Hand-Built Ceramics course will meet on Mondays from 6 to 9 p.m., beginning March 5. Festival Planning will meet on Sundays in March from1 to 4 p.m. and once a month thereafter through November when students will participate in a festival. Heritage Arts Institute Expands program - The center just received a $23,000 grant Heritage Art Institute expandsfrom the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area to expand the Institute’s pottery offerings into such areas as high fire gas, salt and raku firing. This expansion will be made possible through the construction of a 864-square-foot kiln shed that will house three kilns, a glaze mixing area and a washing area. It will be built adjacent to the two existing pottery studios which include 21 pottery wheels, two low-fire electric kilns and hand-building space and equipment. » full story

Fall 2006 President's and Dean's Lists announced - A total of 204 students made the cut for these prestigious honors. Ninety students achieved and maintained a 3.85 Grade Point Average (GPA), earning the honor of President's List. SCC students survey land using satellites -Surveying students use satellites to survey land Surveying students from SCC are communicating with outer space. And they are doing so with high tech equipment the college recently purchased. "We now have a Real Time Kinematic GPS System. With it, our students use information from satellites 11,000 to 12,000 miles in space to determine the positions of points on the surface of the earth," instructor Peter Messier said. » read full story
