Dr. Lynn Dillard, a retired educator and Cashiers resident, has been named director of the SCC Foundation’s board of directors.

A member of the SCC Foundation board since 2013, Dillard has been involved with education since the late 1960s. She served as a teacher for Jackson County Public Schools from 1976-85 and later was principal of the Jackson County Comprehensive School of Alternatives.

“Anytime someone asks me what’s important and what can change the world, I tell them it’s education,” Dillard said. “That’s why I’m honored to serve as chair of the SCC Foundation board of directors.”

Dr. Dillard’s career in education began in 1968 when she became the director of admissions and financial aid for the Mercer University School of Pharmacy.

She’s since served in a variety of roles for a number of school systems and institutions including Transylvania County Schools, Emory University and Western Carolina University.

“Dr. Dillard truly understands how education can change an individual’s life,” said Dr. Don Tomas, president of SCC. “She’s an outstanding advocate for our students.”

Dr. Dillard succeeds Luke Hyde, who served as chair through the 2015-16 academic year.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Dillard continue a long line of board chairs who are passionate about education and helping our students succeed,” said Brett Woods, director of the SCC Foundation. “Dr. Dillard believes strongly in the work we do here, and her leadership will be vital as we continue our ‘March to a Million’ through the Student Success Campaign.”

The most ambitious fundraising effort in Southwestern’s history, the Student Success Campaign aims to raise more than $1 million – primarily for student scholarships. The fund currently has more than $850,000 in the bank.

Other initiatives of the SCC Foundation include endowed scholarships, the student emergency fund and the New Century Scholars program, which guarantees last-dollar, tuition-and-fees support to high-potential students throughout SCC’s service area.
