Lifelong Jackson County resident Douglas L. Cody was sworn in as a member of Southwestern Community College’s board of trustees on Oct. 10 at the Jackson Campus.
Appointed by Governor Pat McCrory, Cody fills the seat previously held by Conrad Burrell.

“I firmly believe a good education is a key component of having a successful, happy and fulfilling life,” said Cody, a graduate of Sylva-Webster High School and Western Carolina University. “Serving on SCC’s board of trustees will enable me to contribute in some way to providing opportunities to individuals who aspire to live a better life. I look forward to the awesome opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.”

For the past 36 years, Cody has worked as a field underwriter and loss-control professional for insurance organizations. He’s currently vice president, property preservations, for Woodus K. Humphrey & Co., Inc.

Cody is a former vice-chairman of the Jackson County board of commissioners (2010-14), and he’s a past vice-chairman of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. He’s a former member of the Jackson County Jaycees and served on various community development organizations such as Mountain Pride and Committee of 100.

He currently serves as vice-chairman of the Jackson County Airport Authority, chairman of the Jackson County Board of Elections and as a member of the Tennessee Valley Corridor Committee.

Cody resides in Sylva with his wife Doris. The couple has two daughters: Julia and Caitlin.

Cody’s term on SCC’s board of trustees runs through June of 2020.

“Mr. Cody has a long history of serving the people of Jackson County, and we’re pleased to have him on our board of trustees,” said Dr. Don Tomas, president of SCC. “These are exciting times for Southwestern Community College, and we are fortunate to have such strong leadership on our board.”
