Southwestern Community College’s sustainable technology class spent Earth Day learning about electric cars with the eco-friendly 2015 Chevrolet Volt.

“You will see more evolving technology and more electric cars being produced due to the growing automotive trend,” said David Myers, automotive systems technology program coordinator and instructor at Southwestern Community College.

SCC’s automotive program understands that electric cars are here to stay. The program has a class, Introduction to Sustainable Transportation, which specifically teaches students about alternative fuels and alternative fuel vehicles like the Chevrolet Volt.

The class teaches unique skills that will be needed in current automotive jobs such as understanding fuel-cell technology, safety related to high voltage cars and minor repairs on electric cars.

Bob Crawford, general manager at Smoky Mountain Chevrolet, loaned a 2015 Chevrolet Volt to SCC for the education of automotive students.

Southwestern Community College has a passion for educating and giving back to the community. The automotive program strives to teach their students new progressive technology to succeed in their career field.

SCC alumni make up a large percentage of citizens in Jackson, Macon, Swain counties and the Qualla Boundary, they are the caring nurses at the hospital and the innovators you see in the news.
