CFRE International has once again named named Brett L. Woods, director of the Southwestern Community College Foundation, as a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE).

First certified in 2006, Woods has been recertified every three years since and is one of some 5,300 professionals globally to hold this designation.

“The CFRE credential was created to identify for the public and employers those individuals who possess the knowledge, skills and commitment to perform fundraising duties in an effective and ethical manner,” said Jim Caldarola, CFRE, Immediate Past Chair of CFRE International. “As the certification is a voluntary achievement, the CFRE credential demonstrates a high level of commitment on the part of Brett L. Woods to himself, the fundraising profession, and, the donors who are served.”

Woods joined SCC in February and has already helped lead several successful efforts, including the “Bluegrass, Blue Jeans & Bling” gala that raised more than $50,000 for the Student Success Campaign – the most ambitious fundraising effort in Southwestern’s history.

The goal of the Student Success Campaign is to raise more than $1 million to help bridge the gap between available scholarships and student need. Of the 226 qualified students who applied for scholarships in the current academic year, the SCC Foundation only had enough funds available to award 61 scholarships.

“To those of us who know Brett, the fact he’s maintained this elite, prestigious status is no surprise,” said Dr. Don Tomas, president of SCC. “We’re extremely pleased he is on our team and spearheading our Foundation’s efforts to make a quality SCC education within reach of more area residents than ever before.”

Individuals granted the CFRE credential have met a series of standards set by CFRE International. Among these are tenure in the profession, education, demonstrated fundraising achievement and a commitment to service to not-for-profit organizations.

They have also passed a rigorous written examination testing the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of a fundraising executive, and have agreed to uphold Accountability Standards and the Donor Bill of Rights. Initially, candidates must pass a rigorous written examination testing the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of a fundraising executive.

Woods also holds certification in Nonprofit Management from Duke University and earned a Master of Liberal Arts Degree from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama.

He previously served as president of the Association of Fundraising Professionals of Western North Carolina and is current Chair of the Jackson County Community Foundation.
