Almost every day, Southwestern Community College inches closer to its goal of marching to a million.

On Sept. 6, the Franklin Rotary Club gave SCC’s Foundation a boost in that direction by giving $5,000 to the Student Success Campaign – the most-ambitious fundraising effort in Southwestern’s history.

The gift pulls SCC to within $53,000 of its goal to establish the college’s first seven-figure endowment to be used primarily for scholarships.

“The Student Success Campaign is a worthy cause,” said Janet Greene, president-elect of the Franklin Rotary Club. “We as a club are all about the education of young people. We support them in growth, in knowledge and in preparing for the future.”

Counting all gifts and pledges to date, the SCC Foundation now has $947,000 for the Student Success Campaign - an effort to bridge the gap between scholarship need and availability for students.

For the current academic year, more than 280 students applied and qualified for financial assistance through the SCC Foundation. However, the college only had enough resources to award 69.

“We are grateful to Franklin Rotary and Rotarians across the region for their vision of supporting education and our students through their gifts,” said Charles Wolfe, who chairs the Student Success Campaign committee.

Dr. Don Tomas, president of SCC, added: “Our students frequently tell me just how much it helps when they receive scholarships through our SCC Foundation, and I know the need is tremendous. I’m so thankful for the momentum we’ve gained through our Student Success Campaign, and that’s a direct result of the generous spirit that has led many individuals and groups like the Franklin Rotary Club to support our students.”
