The accolades just continue to roll in for Southwestern Community College graduate Jesse Moore of Franklin.

Moore has been chosen as the recipient of the 2017-2018 Western Carolina University Chancellor’s Award.

This award is a full scholarship that covers tuition and fees for two years.

In order to be considered for the award, students must have a 3.75 cumulative GPA, be accepted at WCU, and be recommended by a member of the SCC faculty.

“This is such an amazing opportunity,” said Moore. “When they asked me on the application how I plan to represent SCC, I am able to say that I am doing that, right now, with all of the opportunities I’ve been given through the college.”

While most college students are not quite sure what they want to do when they first arrive on a college campus, that was not the case for Moore.

“I knew exactly what I wanted to do when I came to SCC,” said Moore. “I had been an electrician for 17 years before deciding I wanted to get my college education. I knew I wanted to get my associate degree in electronics engineering technology and then transfer to Western to get my electrical engineering bachelor’s degree, which meant I had to take extra classes at SCC such as calculus and physics.”

Moore hit the ground running when he started at SCC in the fall of 2015.

During his time as a student, Moore was the recipient of the NASA/NC Space Grant scholarship, president of the electronics club and veteran’s club, vice president of the STEM club, Student Life Council member, honors college member, and graduated summa cum laude with a 4.0 GPA while taking over 20 credit hours a semester.

Moore has been the high-altitude weather balloon team leader for the past two years and will travel with the team to launch the balloon on Aug. 21 to capture images of the Earth’s shadow 90,000 feet in the air during the solar eclipse.

Moore will continue his education this fall at Western Carolina University, where he plans to major in electrical engineering.
