Helping to Make a Difference

Southwestern Community College’s New Century Scholars Program recently received a $500 donation from Macon Bank in Sylva to support students in Jackson County. The New Century Scholars Program began in 1995 as a collaborative educational effort among public schools in Jackson, Macon and Swain Counties and Southwestern Community College. The New Century Scholars Program targets high potential students at the end of the 6th grade and provides extra support to those students through their middle and high school years and while enrolled at SCC. Each identified student is guaranteed "last dollar" tuition assistance for two years at SCC if he/she has successfully followed his/her contractual agreements. Upon graduation from SCC, New Century Scholars students may apply for specially designated scholarship dollars at Western Carolina University. The New Century Scholars program is completely funded through donations from area businesses and individuals. For more information about how to support the NCS Program, contact Kathy Posey with the SCC Foundation 339-4227.

Rick Kirkpatrick, Vice President, Macon Bank, shared, "We are pleased to provide financial support to the New Century Scholarship program. We believe that education is a significant component to a person’s ability to be successful in their professional life. Many of our employees or their family members have taken advantage of the educational resources available at SCC. We are fortunate to have a nationally ranked institution such as Southwestern Community College that offers educational programs which are positive economic drivers for the students and businesses of Western North Carolina.”

Elaine McFalls, a Customer Services Representative with Macon Bank noted that her daughter, Amber Moss, has benefited from a New Century Scholarship and is graduating with honors in May with plans to continue her education at WCU in the fall.
