Honorable Achievement
It’s officially happened! Southwestern Community College has its first honors class.Vance Waggener made his Calculus III class an honors class.
“We have been working to achieve this goal since Fall 2008 and it’s exciting to have reached this milestone,” said Cheryl Contino-Conner, SCC Honors Program chair.
“I had the same students for a previous class and so I knew they were top notch students," said Waggener. "When they all signed up for me a second time, I wanted to challenge them with this and push them further than they would in a regular classroom. They all eagerly accepted and are very excited to be the first honors class at SCC.”
As to what's different about this class, Waggener said in addition to studying additional material not normally covered in class, the students will meet with him every Wednesday after class to practice and drill for a highly competitive math competition in Gainsville, Ga.
“I'm very proud to be an instructor for these students," Waggener said, adding, "They will certainly deserve their honors title when they complete this class.”
“From our Honors Program fathers, Mike Burnette and Allan Grant, to the more than 50 faculty who have mentored projects over the past three years, SCC's Honors Program is a point of pride for the college and yet another example of the effort and passion SCC faculty put towards students and their disciplines,” said Contino-Conner.
This semester 40 honors projects have been approved.
